Mini Archive: Manchester Histories Festival; Belle Vue Zoological Gardens

On Wednesday, Clare Turner from Manchester Histories Festival visited us to discuss the importance of the registered charity, as well as explain the idea behind it. Established in 2009, the festival aims to engage with people and reveal the lost or hidden histories of Manchester, providing a wide range of activities all year round.

Turner also began to talk to us about 'Belle Vue', describing it as 'a massive Disneyland and historical narrative of Manchester'. In all honesty, I'd never even heard of Belle Vue, but as Clare continued to present us with photographs and incredible stories of this magical place, the excitement and interest grew stronger.

Founded in 1836, Belle Vue was a large amusement park, exhibition hall complex and speedway stadium, situated in Manchester. With the vision, determination and enthusiasm from entrepreneur John Jennison(1793-1869), the park was initially designed to entertain the genteel middle classes, with formal gardens and open-air dancing over the summer months, however it didn't take long before it transformed into one of the most popular attractions in Northern England.

Even though I have real interest in pursuing the ideas which I developed from visiting Blackpool Pleasure Beach, I think Belle Vue has been really inspirational and I think there could be various aspects which I could look into, for my work.
