I started to experiment with layering cell motifs on top of surfaces I had created (responding to textures found within cells) however, when I compared them with the african shapes and letters, I didn't feel that they were as strong. I think the stereotypical African shapes are a lot more striking and bold, and therefore this is what I'm hoping to work with in the future.

I've also been working on honing my ideas together to start my 'design development' stage, as well as create a colour palette to work with. Creating yarn wrappings has been really useful; I know that I want a simplistic warp (possibly grey) but I would like to include flashes of colour every now and again, to create a bit of excitement within my work and put a contemporary twist on the traditional african style.
From the wrappings, I have learnt that I only want to work with mercerised cotton, to emphasise the powerful designs that I will put in my weaves, rather than be distracted by different yarns, i.e mohair.

I think this week has been fairly successful. I've also had a PDP tutorial towards the end of the week with Lesley and I feel confident with where my project is going at the moment. I need to remember to keep pushing myself and try to face challenges within my work, so next week I'm planning on looking back into the dying aspect of my project.
