Locating - Live Brief - Week One

Warhol has always been an artist I have been aware of, however I have never properly taken the time to appreciate his work. The Transmitting Andy Warhol exhibition at Tate Liverpool was a real eye-opener and has inspired me to use one of his pieces to work from, for Wallace#Sewell. The work portrayed, provided an insight into the breadth of Warhol's processes and allowed me to further discover the man who transformed the modern art world. For this unit, I not only think it is important to study what is on the surface of the painting of my choice, but also study the artist and fully understand the ideas behind their work. I feel this will help produce a more complete collection.

The vast range of work displayed in the exhibition reaffirmed that I wanted to use a vibrant piece and I have chosen to focus on the collection of paintings of Chairman Mao. There were only four displayed in the Tate, out of the entire collection, however I feel that this works to my advantage, as I think the full piece would be too overwhelming for my colour palette.

I think what has appealed to me the most about this painting is the strong contrast between the colours, creating a block effect, yet printing it in the classic Warhol repetitive style. I wanted to choose a piece of art that would enable me to use block threading and weave large blocks of colour, and I feel this meets my brief well. Comparing it to the famous Marilyn Monroe piece, I much prefer this one due to the change of colours for each individual prints, rather than the same colours throughout.
I'm really looking forward to creating colour stripes to see how the colours work together when taken out of the painting. I also think it will be interesting to see how colours from different prints will mix together and whether they'll compliment each other, or clash.
