These photographs are of my drawings in my sketchbook at the start of the Textile World. I wanted to continue to keep the focus on my photos which I'd taken around the city and chose to work with a simple monochromatic colour palette, to allow me to concentrate on the sketches.
Theses first images are looking at the shapes and patterns within my photographs, which I created using a variety of materials, including designers gouache, charcoal, graphite and oil pastels.
For the first sketch I looked at not only the patterns themselves, but also the negative space around them. This gave me the opportunity to concentrate on the shapes more closely, and experiment with designs and composition.
The next drawings were experimenting with the lines within the images, and experimenting with ways in which I could portray them. Even though I love the simplicity of the second photo, I really like the layers of pastel and depth that there is, in the third photograph.
I then moved on to combining the sketches I'd previously done, with scrunched up papers, to create more interesting drawings as well as experiment with the textural side of my photographs too.
For the last two images of the sequence I chose to focus purely on the textures and layers of the subjects which I had photographed, rather than the lines and patterns. I worked on a black background, with brown paper, newspaper and old books, before then working on top again with black indian ink and white designer's gouache. Although these drawings are fairly abstract, I think I've managed to capture certain aspects from my photos in the drawings; whether it be the erosion on a wall or the bark of a tree.
