Matt Saunders: Century Rolls

Matt Saunders was born in Tacoma, Washington in 1975. He received a BA from Harvard before completing his MFA in Painting and Printmaking at Yale University. Currently Saunders is a visiting lecturer in the Department of Visual and Environmental Studies at Harvard. He lives and works between Cambridge, Massachusetts and Berlin, Germany.
Saunders' works on paper are created by light through a drawing or painting to expose a sheet of photosensitive paper.

Although the subject of Saunders' artwork are often obscure film muses who hold personal significance for him, I've found a similarity between his style of work and some of my drawings. I love the way in which his artwork looks very simplistic, however at a closer look can actually seem quite complex and has a lot of depth in the paintings. The technique he uses for the 'spilt ink' effect leaves a similar impression which I have incorporated into some of my sketches, and I'm really inspired by his loose style of working.
