The images above are a selection of my knitting samples, displaying some of the techniques that I have been developing in the studio. I also wanted to incorporate my colour scheme of quite natural and earthy colours into my work.
When selecting my yarns, I took a lot of thought into not only the colours but also the feel of them. After studying the textural aspects of my photographs from the city, I thought it was important to follow this through into my knit work and experiment with ways in which I could portray it in my samples.
The first image shows a sample I produced using a punch-card, however it is actually the back of the sample. I decided to photograph this as I felt it was really interesting, showing much more detail compared to the front, and linked well with some of my textural drawings.
The following three photographs are more of my samples, however I chose to introduce different green yarns to try and give the knitting more of a depth to it. I love how you can use the same yarns but in different ways and with different techniques or settings on the machines, to create a wide variety of samples that are nothing alike.
When trying to draw some of the city's textures in the knit samples, I particularly liked using the punch-cards on the 'lace' setting, as I feel that the finished effect it created was really unusual and sometimes moss-like.
