After finishing the three weeks of knitting, I was really excited about starting the weave workshops! Before learning to use the looms, I wanted to spend time experimenting with small weaves which I created out of paper.
These photographs show my starting point, where I focused on creating weaves using line drawings on cartridge paper, using oil pastels, newspaper, graphite and black indian ink.
I then pursued the idea of working with paper but this time decided to create more of a textured surface, as I had been doing so in my previous drawings. I much prefer these weaves as I feel that they relate to my drawings really well and look much more interesting, because there seems to be more going on within the weaves.
I think I prefer the first weave over the second. I think the colours compliment each other well, and I like how the newspapers and materials have worked on the white paper, compared to the brown.
I think translating some of these ideas into my weaves on the looms will be quite difficult, but I've taken a lot of time considering the yarns which I will use to give my work some texture.
