These photographs are taken from my sketchbook, where I've concentrated on developing my pattern drawings, as well as introducing my colour scheme.
To create the first drawing I started by applying white designer's gouache to create a textural surface, which I then worked on top of with graphite sticks and black fine liner. I really like the effect that the graphite gives when applied onto the gouache, and the way it changes the tone of it creates depth and interest in the drawing.
The next two drawings allowed me to continue with patterns, whilst experimenting with how layering and repeating the sketches would add to them, as well as varying ways in which I could incorporate my colour palette. The second photograph of the two also includes cut-out parts from the stencil I had produced, which is shown in the image below. I really enjoyed this way of working as it was so simple yet effective; enabling me to translate not only the patterns I studied in my photos, but also some of the textures as well.
