Monday's Meeting

Today we had our usual Monday morning lecture however this week was ever so slightly different. (Prior to the meeting, we were asked to bring with us a needle & thread, A4 paper and scissors.) Kate began to talk to us about how research suggests that people concentrate and retain information better if they are doing something with their hands, whilst they listen.

The photograph above shows the work I created during the lecture. I did initially think about working with fine liner however wanted to branch away from the DATA project I've been doing, so chose to focus on needlework and mark making instead.

It surprised me as to how much this idea worked; it was a new method of working for me and I feel that not only did I find myself focusing more, but also that my 'doodle' was my way of responding to what was being discussed. It was really interesting to see ways in which artists and designers use a variety of strategies to evolve and develop their ideas, and to understand that sometimes making mistakes and getting confused isn't always a bad thing.

Mark Hearld

An artist that was mentioned during the lecture was Mark Hearld and I have completely fallen in love with his work! As an award-winning illustrator who takes inspiration from the countryside, Hearld works across a variety of mediums, producing limited edition lithographic and linocut prints, paintings, collages and ceramics.
