New techniques and sketches

In terms of my sketchbook this week, I feel like my work has hit a bit of a wall and I'm struggling to see which direction I want to go in next. I've started to work in more of a circular shape; I feel it allows me to limit my work space, which forces me to really concentrate on what it is that I'm drawing. I also think it links well to the idea of cells and various aspects of the brain.

I've also learnt two new techniques on the sewing machines - tailor tacking and hair pinning. I definitely much preferred tailor tacking, as I felt you could do a lot more with it, compared to hair pinning which I just got frustrated with. The first image shown below is my favourite sample of the week because I love the effect that is given from varying the tension on the machine and removing the top thread. The second image is is a technique called 'horizontal stitch' which is also created using tailor tacking. I think the looseness of the yarn which I threaded through the stitches subtly reflects some of the lines in my drawings and I like the contrast it gives against the harshness of the horizontal stitches.
