Professionalism and Employability Task 2

Throughout this entire project, I think my biggest inspiration has been the exhibition I visited at MOSI; 'Brains - The Mind as Matter'. The exhibition was a massive eye-opener for me and allowed me to view the brain as not only an organ but also as a piece of beauty and art. I was fascinated at how different artists portrayed how they saw the brain and this made me incredibly excited about how I could do that myself. It was after my visit when I knew that I wanted to further research into brains for my DATA project.
The image of my work above was my initial response to my research. I chose to combine what I'd seen at the exhibition, with the drawings I'd created during my visit, yet also develop them in a stylised way. Looking back, I also think this piece is a good representation of how I was thinking at the time; I was so excited by the prospect of what this project could become and had so many ideas that I couldn't wait to try out and see what the results would be.

Another great inspiration to me has been the work of Susie MacMurray, who is a British artist living in Manchester, and her work includes drawing, sculpture and architectural installations. During this project I have studied her pen and ink drawings in particular; the movement created and ability that she has to give the impression that the image is almost dancing is incredible. I've tried to carry this idea across into my own work, in not only my drawings but my embroidery samples as well.

A third big influence to me during this project has been a book I discovered called 'Creative Drawing - Point and Line'. It has been a wonderful discovery for me and has really helped me experiment with different styles of drawing, learning new techniques and looking at interesting ways to create lines.

The piece displayed in the photograph on the right is one of my most recent drawings, and I feel that there is great similarity between both pieces of artwork.

In my previous unit, I stated that 'in the past I've never particularly enjoyed drawing; I've always understood it to be an important way of expressing your ideas however struggled with observational drawings.' This DATA unit has allowed me to further experiment and develop my drawing skills in ways that have really excited and interested me. I'm looking forward to the next project and how I can extend these learnt techniques even further.

Over the past couple of months, I think that my style of working has changed significantly and I feel that I'm beginning to fully understand what aspect of textiles it is that interests me and what doesn't. Having spent the past unit working with embroidery, I've realised that although I've thoroughly enjoyed it as a project, I don't think it's an area that I can see myself working with in the future. I've found it a difficult medium to express myself and my ideas with, however maybe in the future there will be techniques that I have learnt from Kate and Nigel that I can incorporate into my other work.
