Margo Selby Internship - Week One

After my first day in the studio, I feel like I've been in the middle of a whirlwind; there is SO much to learn! What I have been most surprised by is the amount of designs and products that Margo Selby creates, particularly for a relatively small business-it's going to take me a long time to remember all the fabric names!!

As an intern, my main role is to be in charge of packaging and dispatch, therefore a lot of my time is spent making sure that all orders are completed to an excellent standard and are posted in a suitable way, to the correct client. The novelty of producing orders for Liberty and John Lewis definitely hasn't worn off yet...it's all very exciting!

I've also had the opportunity to work alongside the Head of Design to produce presentation boards for the leading fabric and wallpaper designers, Osborne & Little. Initially, this was fairly tricky as it involved a lot of overlocking (a machine that is new to me) however, after time spent practicing, I believe that the finished boards looked really professional and will stand strong in the presentation.

For such a successful business, it's interesting to know that some days are much quieter than others, and this is something I definitely need to bare in mind when setting up my own business. Quiet doesn't necessarily mean failure.
It's fascinating to learn all the roles that people play to keep the company running well; nobody slacks and this keeps things neat and at a high standard.

This week has been a huge range of emotions but most of all it's been a big challenge; the studio is an incredible place to be working in however it's never easy being the 'new girl', so I'm looking forward to becoming more comfortable with everyone!

REMEMBER:
-Linton Tweeds, incredible fabric samples and unusual yarns
-Box John Lewis orders in alphabetical order
-Always keep track of fabric meterage/ product amounts
-Selvedge magazine, similar to Craft
