Sampling: Hand Embroidery

Week one of hand embroidery and I already prefer it to machine. I felt quite restricted when using the machines and unable to be as creative as I wanted to be, however with hand embroidery I find it a lot easier to create the ideas that I have and relate my stitchery to my drawings better. The photograph above is one of the first samples that I created, yet it is one of my favourites. I love using white on white and I think this is a prime example of it working well, as I believe it compliments the design well, along with the delicacy and intricacy of the stitching.

This was a quick sketch, using black fine liner, of a different aspect of the brain - a slice of brain tissue. As horrible as the subject was, I was fascinated by the shapes and patterns formed within the organ and was interested as to how I could portray these using hand embroidery. Below is one of my examples of how I took the image and responded to it. Using a detailed thread I was able to draw an abstract representation of my sketch, before simply securing it, with ladder stitch. I think I like the simplicity of this sample, but I don't think that there is any other aspect of it that particularly 'grabs' me. I was hoping for it to be more effective and eye-catching, and unfortunately I don't think it has been.
