William Anastasi

William Anastasi is an American painter and visual artist, living and working in New York since the 1960s. His work is predominantly abstract and conceptual.

The drawing shown below is from a collection called 'Subway Drawings'.

'Sitting with a pencil in each hand and a drawing board on his lap, his elbows at an angle of 90 degrees, his shoulders away from the back rest, Anastasi was operating as a seismograph, allowing the rhythm of the moving train - its starts, stops and turns, accelerations and decelerations, to be transformed into lines on paper.'

I love the lines that have been created using such a simple technique; the fluidity and movement of the drawing really gives the impression that William Anastasi was actually being knocked from side to side when he was drawing this piece, and I see great similarity between some of his work and the drawings that I produced at MOSI.
